Playground Framed Structures

A framed fabric structure comprises shade fabric tensioned over a steel frame. They come in symmetrical shapes, such as squares and rectangles and their lengths, widths and heights are fully customizable. Framed structures create large amounts of shade with minimal design or engineering and are easy to assemble and disassemble. These structures are permanent, however, depending on the footings, their position can be adjusted after the initial installation if required. These structures are particularly popular with playgrounds, swimming pools and any other space providing maximum shade for participants or users of a space.

Advantages

Maximum Amount of Shade – Due to their symmetrical shade and lack of a catenary curve, framed structures provide the most amount of shade when compared to our other products. This ensures the maximum amount of protection from UV rays and provides the largest return on investment.

Less Extensive Footings & Posts – Because the force of the tensioned fabric is spread throughout the steel frame, the required footings are much less extensive than a free-span structure. For applications where the structure is installed on a substantial surface like concrete or asphalt, we can bolt the steel frame to the existing surface. For less substantial surfaces like grass, smaller footings are required but significantly smaller than the size of those of a free-span structure. In addition, the steel used for framed structures is much thinner than those used for a free-span structure.

Ease of Engineering & Design – Because the design options are limited on a framed structure, the design and engineering process is much less extensive, meaning the time to installation is faster and the cost of the structure is less.

Retrofit possibilities – Because these structures require less extensive engineering, they are much easier to retrofit into an existing facility. We are often contacted by those who need shade for their existing space quickly, due to the facility being unusable during the summer. Framed structures are compatible with a much wider range of existing spaces and are quick and easy to install.

Disadvantages

Shade Limitations – With a free-span structure, we are able to design the shade to accommodate different sun positions throughout the day by varying the heights of posts and attachment points. A framed structure is limited to certain shapes and the heights of the corners can’t be varied. This usually isn’t a problem if the area requires shade during the middle of the day but can be an issue during the mornings and late afternoons.

Lack of Aesthetic – Depending on your preference, a framed structure lacks the aesthetic quality of a free-span structure, for example. However, if functional shade at a lower cost is your main priority, these structures are excellent for a wide range of applications.

Construction

Stainless Steel Perimeter – The perimeter of our framed canopies is reinforced with a stainless steel cable, ensuring maximum amounts of tension and longevity.
Double-Stitched Seams – Poorly constructed seams can lead to fraying and strain on a canopy’s perimeter. We double stitch our seams with high-quality UV-stabilised thread ensuring a clean, even look throughout the perimeter of your structure.
Marine-Grade Hardware – For outdoor products, high-quality hardware is essential for both the aesthetics and the longevity of your structure. All of our hardware is made from marine-grade forged 316 stainless steel imported from Denmark. High load rated, this material is extremely strong and corrosion-resistant ensuring a polished finish for the life of your hardware.
Galvanized or Powder-Coated Steel – Frames come galvanized as standard and we also offer an upgrade to powder-coated, which can be used to match the colour of your branding or equipment.
