West Point Grey Academy is an exclusive private school in an upscale area of Vancouver, a short walk from the University of British Columbia. The school has a strong emphasis on Fine Arts and Architecture with its own dedicated Arts Wing and frequent international fields trips. The design requirements were to shade their newly renovated play area for children with an all-weather structure.
Key considerations in the conceptual stage were the post heights in order to accommodate all weather conditions, in particular, the facilitation of snow and rain run-off. The use of a single sail was implemented to offer maximum coverage and providing the most amount of protection. Engineering considerations were paramount when designing the footings and the fabrication of the sail to account for the Vancouver climate.
