Hypods

A Hypod comprises a hyperbolic shade sail flown inside a single-mast steel frame, exhibiting the aesthetic qualities of a free-span fabric structure while keeping the footing requirements as minimal as possible. Hypods are permanent structures with a substantial single footing required, this also increases their performance in inclement weather conditions. They are available in three sizes: 12’ or 16’ (perimeter edge, not diagonal). Most of our installations are in playgrounds and child care facilities, these structures can also be used anywhere requiring aesthetic unobtrusive shade.

Advantages

ShadeArt™ – Thanks to their hyperbolic shape, achieved by flying two diagonally opposing points substantially lower than the other points, Our Hypod structures are great for adding an aesthetic quality to your space and can be combined with our Dual Shade fabric to create a truly unique facility.

Unobtrusive – Unlike a KwikShade, the need for only one footing creates a relatively large amount of shade while keeping the structure as unobtrusive as possible. This is particularly useful for active spaces such as playgrounds and we can provide further protection for children by adding padding to the mast.

Weatherproof – Structures with extensive footings have better performance in inclement weather conditions. A hyperbolic shade sail is also preferable to a flat canopy, with its aerodynamic shape performing much better in strong wind and rain.

Waterproof – The canopy shape improves water run-off and eliminates water pooling, and therefore as well as shade fabric, waterproof fabric can also be used for these structures. We still recommend taking the sail down in months with expected snowfall, however, a waterproof canopy can extend the usability of your facility well into the shoulder season.

Disadvantages

More Substantial Footings – Construction equipment is required for the installation of these structures and, although these footings come with some inherent benefits, they are not ideal for all facilities especially those looking for a retro-fit solution.

Limited Span – Due to the load placed on the mast from the frame, sail and weather, the span is much more limited for single-mast structures than it is for free-span structures, for example.

Construction

Marine-Grade Hardware – For outdoor products, high-quality hardware is essential for both the aesthetics and the longevity of your structure. All of our hardware is made from marine-grade forged 316 stainless steel imported from Denmark. High load rated, this material is extremely strong and corrosion-resistant ensuring a polished finish for the life of your hardware.
Double-Stitched Seams – Poorly constructed seams can lead to fraying and strain on a sail’s perimeter. We double stitch our seams with high-quality UV-stabilised thread ensuring a clean even look throughout the perimeter of your sail.
Triple-Layered Reinforced Corners – Our reinforced corners allow increased levels of tension, improving the aesthetic of the sail and its performance in wind and rain.
Galvanized or Powder-Coated Steel – Frames come galvanized as standard and we also offer an upgrade to powder-coated, which can be used to match the colour of your branding or equipment.
